DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKING

Take your documentary project from idea to final edit. The Documentary Filmmaking program consists of two parts, each focusing on a unique aspect of the documentary form. Taken together, the classes provide in-depth study and practice in documentary techniques, production, shooting, editing and post-production. Basic knowledge of video camera operation and Final Cut Pro editing software is required for the program.
DOCUMENTARY PART 1 - AN OVERVIEW OF THE FORM (DOC 1)

An introduction to documentary history, aesthetics and ethics as well as the basics of digital non-fiction production. The class will explore some of the fundamental techniques used to tell non-fiction stories for the screen as students formulate and begin researching their short individual project.

DOCUMENTARY PART 2 - PRODUCTION (DOC 2)

A deeper exploration of the process of working from concept to completed production of a short documentary project. Students acquire hands-on experience producing, directing, shooting, editing and sound recording and design. Pre-requisite: Documentary Part 1 or instructor permission.

SCREENWRITING

All you need to know to get those great stories and characters of yours out of your head and onto the page in a structure tailored for the screen. Learn story structure, character and plot development as you take your dramatic idea from outline to polished finished script in a workshop environment.
SCREENWRITING 1 (SCR1)

Students are introduced to the basics of screenwriting structure with reading and discussion of full-length scripts. Students will begin to develop ideas for their own screenplays by studying how characters are created, themes are developed and stories are structured. Incorporating the elements of dialogue, story and structure, students turn their ideas into the beginning pages of a draft script. Prerequisite for Screenwriting 2.

SCREENWRITING 2 (SCR2)

Students finish a rough draft of their script while gaining further practice in the unique process of writing for the screen and building on the foundations learned in Screenwriting 1: character, dialogue, scene, story and structure. Prerequisite: Screenwriting 1, or by arrangement with instructor.

ANIMATION

A fascinating medium of increasing popularity, animation is enjoying expanding venues for showcasing the finished product. We offer both a beginner class and advanced class depending on your level of experience with animating. Using in-class exercises like drawing, modeling and storyboarding you'll learn the foundations of animation art and the importance of setting the groundwork for character design.
ANIMATION 1 - ANIMATION BASICS (ANIM1)

In this class you'll be familiarized with animation as a whole and introduced to the various forms of animation, with no experience needed. The class will cover animation types such as drawn, stop-motion, cut-out and non-traditional/experimental. You'll create some original animation while learning the concepts of squash and stretch, framerates and image rates, key frames, visual weight, movement and anatomy, and cel creation.

ANIMATION 2 - ADVANCED ANIMATION (ANIM2)

Produce a complete short animated video project, for those who've taken ANIMATION1 or who have some animation experience. A more project-focused class detailing idea generation, pre-production, animating and editing, through to completion. Concepts include sound and dialogue recording, character designs and rigging, photography, foley art and compositing.

EDITING

A critical part of the filmmaking process, editing tells the story of the film based on the script and the shot footage. Our editing classes teach the basic techniques and features of Final Cut Pro as well as editing theory and methods.
EDITING 1 - WORKING WITH FINAL CUT PRO (ED1)

This class teaches the basic components of editing using Final Cut Pro, including logging and capturing footage and how to use the timeline. Add polish and effective pacing to your project as you learn how to use such effects as dissolves, fades and wipes. Improve the look/feel of your work by learning how to incorporate music and other audio effects, titles and graphics.

EDITING 2 - ADVANCED EDITING TECHNIQUES (ED2)

Hone your editing skills with this class covering editing theory and methods. Go beyond the functions of the editing software to learn how to use editing to tell a story with effective pacing, using the script and the shot footage.

CINEMATOGRAPHY

Students gain practical knowledge and a grounding in light and camera theory and practical applications, including use of a 35mm film camera in Cinematography 2. Completion of Cinematography 1 is a prerequisite for enrollment in Cinematography 2. Topics include color temperature, focal length, aperture, shutter speed and depth of field. PLEASE NOTE: These are lecture classes that teach Cinematography theory, not video production or how to make a movie. For that, consider our Weekend Video Production Program
CINEMATOGRAPHY 1 - FOUNDATIONS OF MOTION PICTURE PHOTOGRAPHY (CIN1)

Learn the fundamentals of cinematography and build a strong foundation on which to develop as a cinematographer. Topics include cameras, film and digital formats, metering, exposure and filtration, camera movement, lighting theory, on-set etiquette and crew structure. The class combines discussion, viewing samples and technical handouts. Recommended text: American Cinematographer Manual.

CINEMATOGRAPHY 2 - FROM PREP TO POST (CIN2)

An advanced class for those with an understanding of cinematography. Topics include work flow, cameras, film and digital formats, metering, exposure and filtration, camera movement, lighting theory, on-set etiquette and crew structure. The class combines discussion, viewing samples and technical handouts. Recommended text: American Cinematography Manual.

VIDEOGRAPHY

If you've always wanted to learn proper use of your video camera, these classes are for you. They include using a tripod, dolly and hand-held techniques, how to properly frame a shot, basic lighting techniques, microphone use and sound gathering, and project planning.
VIDEOGRAPHY  1 - CAMERA OPERATION FUNDAMENTALS (VID1)

If you want to learn the basics of camera operation and filmmaking but do not have a lot of time, this class gets you in and out with a DVD in your hand in one weekend. Conceive, plan and complete a short digital video project while gaining a basic understanding of production elements such as camera operation, location sound recording, lighting, design elements and editing.

VIDEOGRAPHY 2 - ADVANCED CAMERA OPERATION (VID2)

For those who have some experience operating a camera and shooting projects, this course focuses on the conception and completion of a more complex video project with advanced production techniques.

Please complete your registration on our Registration page. Your registration is not complete until full payment is received by the school.  Registration must be completed and payment made at least two weeks before the start of class.

GENERAL POLICY

All students must be 18 years of age by the date of the first class, except for those courses specifically offered for younger students. Waivers to this policy may be made at the discretion of Filmtech. Attendance of all class sessions is critical to getting the full educational value out of a class. For this reason, a Certificate of Completion will be awarded only to students who attend at least 70% of class hours. All works created by Filmtech students in conjunction with a Filmtech course are the property of the student. However, Filmtech reserves the right to use the work for marketing and promotional purposes.

TUITION REFUNDS AND CANCELLATIONS

No tuition will be refunded within 14 calendar days of a class start date. Filmtech reserves the right to cancel any class before it starts due to insufficient enrollment, in which case tuition will be fully refunded.
