15-Week Advanced Film and Video Production Program

Prerequisite: 15-Week Video Production Program or Department Approval based on previous education and/or experience.

The Advanced Program continues to build on the skills and techniques learned in Video Production. You write longer scripts and produce more in-depth projects on HD video as well as film formats. The program consists of weekly classes in the following subjects:.

The foundation of any film or video project is the screenplay, whether it is an original work or adapted from a book or play. The screenwriting module takes you through the steps necessary to write a screenplay and, as a filmmaker, bring your creative vision to the elements of story, plot, character, dialogue and scene structure. After writing short scripts the first few weeks, the course broadens out to focus on developing and writing a feature-length screenplay.

The director is responsible for calling the shots on the set and making all creative decisions involved with the production. You'll learn how to break down a script, develop a shot list, block and cover scenes. As the program progresses, you'll gain practice in developing a visual aesthetic with a cinematographer, lighting scenes, setting up shots and designing camera movements, directing actors and making editorial decisions.

A well-organized and efficient production is crucial to maintaining a smooth-running set and delivering a product on time and on budget, whether it's a short or feature. Filmtech's Producing module takes you through the steps of property acquisition, development, funding and rights. You'll learn about budgeting, including union and line costs, accounting, script breakdown and scheduling; hiring, overseeing and managing a crew, running a set, post-production, marketing and distribution.

Capturing light is the essence of the moving picture process and sets the art form apart from others. The cinematography module introduces you to the foundations of cinematography through the exploration of the camera, digital and film formats, camera movement, lighting theory, filtration and lenses. As your projects become more complex and you continue to develop your visual style, you'll learn about the tech scout, assembling an equipment list and prepping gear, all you need to know from pre-production to post.

15-Week Independent Study Program

Prerequisites: 15-Week Video Production Program and 15-Week Advanced Film and Video Production Progam.

The independent study program is an important part of your training and education as a filmmaker. It gives you the freedom to explore in more depth what aspect of filmmaking interests you as you learn to work independently on your own film and video projects on your own time and at your own pace. You submit a project proposal at the beginning of the program and have15 weeks to complete it - whether it's writing an original script, adapting a property, directing or producing an entire film, etc. You will have access to the school's equipment, computers, facilities and instructors for the duration of the Program.

Independent Study Program start dates are flexible as you will be working on your own and there are no class meetings. Your schedule is set in coordination with the Executive Director.

Tuition for the Independent Study Program is $3,900.

Applicants to the 1-Year Program must have a high school diploma or GED, and must be at least 18 years old at the program start date. No prior video or film production experience or education is necessary, but a 1-page essay is required describing what you want to get out of your education, any experience in video production you’ve had and what you want to do after you complete the program. A phone or personal interview with the executive director and visit to the school is suggested. Register Online

Students who successfully complete the 1-Year Program may apply for an internship. These are short-term, non-paying opportunities to work for Philadelphia-area production companies, film festivals, professional crew and other film- and video-related organizations.

The 1-Year Program is a Bachelor's Certificate Program. Certificates will be awarded to those students who successfully complete the assigned work and who attend at least 80% of the class hours. At the end of the program, students will have a portfolio consisting of the scripts they wrote and a DVD of the group and individual projects they made. All work created by the student while enrolled at Filmtech is the property of the student, however Filmtech reserves the right to use all or portions of student work for marketing, promotional and other purposes.

No refund will be given after the program begins. No Certificate will be awarded if a student withdraws at any time before the Program is completed.

Filmtech has made arrangements to offer a financing program to enable its students to pay their tuition over time. Contact the school for more information.
