Filmtech Individual Class Schedule - Fall 2010

You can register for a Filmtech course online using Paypal or Google Checkout, or by calling our Registration Office at 215-313-0123. Registration must be completed and payment made at least three weeks before the start of class. There is a $25 non-refundable registration fee for each class, which is included in the Paypal and Google checkout amount. Please read the policy terms at the bottom of this page.

DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKING

Take your documentary project from idea to final edit. The Documentary Filmmaking program consists of two parts, each focusing on a unique aspect of the documentary form. Taken together, the classes provide in-depth study and practice in documentary techniques, production, shooting, editing and post-production. Basic knowledge of video camera operation and Final Cut Pro editing software is required for the program.

DOCUMENTARY PART 1 - AN OVERVIEW OF THE FORM (DOC 1)

An introduction to documentary history, aesthetics and ethics as well as the basics of digital non-fiction production and post. Using digital video cameras for shooting and Final Cut Pro for editing, the class will explore some of the fundamental techniques used to tell non-fiction stories for the screen.

DOCUMENTARY PART 2 - PRODUCTION (DOC 2)

A deeper exploration of the process of working from concept to completed production, including financing and distribution. Students acquire hands-on experience producing, directing, shooting, editing and sound recording and design. Pre-requisite: Documentary Part 1 or instructor permission.

PRODUCING

This intensive class teaches all you need to know to turn that great idea into a film or video project - whether it's a short or feature. You'll learn everything from property acquisition and development to budgeting and financing, script breakdown and scheduling. You'll also learn the day-to-day tasks of set management, how to hire and oversee a crew and run a production.

CINEMATOGRAPHY

Students gain practical knowledge and a grounding in light and camera theory, including use of a 35mm film camera in Cinematography 2. Completion of Cinematography 1 is a prerequisite for enrollment in Cinematography 2.

Enrollment in Cinematography 1 and 2 together is discounted to $1080. Please register by phone to receive this discount.

Learn the fundamentals of cinematography and build a strong foundation on which to develop as a cinematographer. Topics include cameras, film and digital formats, metering, exposure and filtration, camera movement, lighting theory, on-set etiquette and crew structure. The class combines discussion, viewing samples and technical handouts. Recommended text: American Cinematography Manual.

SCREENWRITING

All you need to know to get those great stories and characters of yours out of your head and onto the page in a structure tailored for the screen. Learn story structure, character and plot development as you take your dramatic idea from outline to polished finished script in a workshop environment.

Enrollment in Screenwriting 1 and 2 together is discounted to $1080. Please enroll by phone to receive this discount.

SCREENWRITING 1 (SCR1)

Students are introduced to the basics of screenwriting structure with reading and discussion of full-length scripts. Students will begin to develop ideas for their own screenplays by studying how characters are created, themes are developed and stories are structured. Incorporating the elements of dialogue, story and structure, students turn their ideas into the beginning pages of a draft script. Prerequisite for Screenwriting 2. Required texts: How to Write a Movie in 21 Days by Vicki King, Story by Robert McKee.

SCREENWRITING 2 (SCR2)

Students finish a rough draft of their script while gaining further practice in the unique process of writing for the screen and building on the foundations learned in Screenwriting 1: character, dialogue, scene, story and structure. Prerequisite: Screenwriting 1, or by arrangement with instructor.

EDITING (ED)

This class teaches the basic components of editing using Final Cut Pro. Add polish and effective pacing to your project as you learn how to use such effects as dissolves, fades and wipes. Improve the look/feel of your work by learning how to incorporate music and other audio effects, titles and graphics.

VIDEOGRAPHY (VID)

If you want to learn the basics of camera operation and filmmaking but do not have a lot of time, this class gets you in and out with a DVD in your hand in one weekend. The class works together as a crew to conceive, plan and complete a short digital video project while gaining a basic understanding of production elements such as camera operation, location sound recording, lighting, design elements, directing actors and editing.

DIRECTING ACTORS (DA)

Perfect for filmmakers of all levels who want to hone the process of working with actors and sharpen their directing skills. Students work with each other to workshop scenes as they explore how directors interact with writers and actors to realize their creative vision of the screenplay. The course includes practice conceptualizing a character, auditioning and casting, running rehearsals and working with actors on the set. Through class work and out-of-class assignments, students will develop the concept of a character from the screenplay, formulate an idea of what physical and emotional qualities you want to see in an actor as it pertains to the casting and audition process, practice how to identify the psychological and emotional motivation of a character and learn techniques on how to elicit the relevant dramatic response from an actor on the set.

THE PHILADELPHIA SCENE

The greater Philadelphia area is more and more becoming a place for film, TV and commercial production. Our Production Assistant and Location Scouting/Management courses give you a practical grounding in the realities of working on a set.

PRODUCTION ASSISTING (PA)

This course teaches you the hierarchy and protocol on a set and what will be expected of you as a production assistant. A P.A. may be called on to perform a number of tasks, working with the director and production crew to ensure the production runs smoothly and the set is run effectively.

LOCATION SCOUTING AND MANAGEMENT (LOC)

Students will gain a thorough knowledge and training in what a location scout and manager is expected to do, including: work with the production company to find suitable shooting locations as called for in the script; liaison between the production, the community, and local and state government to secure the locations; help obtain permissions and permits; and manage location issues during the shoot.

GENERAL POLICY

All students must be 18 years of age by the date of the first class, except for those courses specifically offered for younger students. Waivers to this policy may be made at the discretion of Filmtech. Attendance of all class sessions is critical to getting the full educational value out of a class. For this reason, a Certificate of Completion will be awarded only to students who attend at least 70% of class hours. All works created by Filmtech students in conjunction with a Filmtech course are the property of the student. However, Filmtech reserves the right to use portions of the work for marketing and promotional purposes.

TUITION REFUNDS AND CANCELLATIONS

75% of the tuition will be refunded if the student leaves the course before the first 25% of course hours have passed. No tuition will be refunded after 25% of course hours have passed. Filmtech reserves the right to cancel any class due to insufficient enrollment, in which case tuition will be fully refunded.
